Our history

Past, present and future of the summer camps

English Summer S.A. was founded by Mrs. Margaret Wright and her husband Jordi Fleix Pujol in 1980, in their own summer house located in the town of Vallclara (Tarragona).

The first camp was attended by a group of 17 students from the private classes that Mrs. Wright made in the city of Tarragona. These families were the pioneers and year after year, the number of students increased thanks to their recommendations.

Later, in 1987, the Fleix family bought the Hotel Balneari La Capella in Poblet (Tarragona) and expanded the offer to carry out summer camps. As a result of the success of summer camps and private lessons, in 1989 an English language academy was opened in Tarragona and in 1992 a second academy was opened in Reus.

Summer camps continued to grow, so the Fleix family opened a new center in 1998, but this time a few meters from the beach, the Tamarit camp (Tarragona). Later, during the summer of 2004, another residential center was inaugurated, this time in the mountains of Prades. This is the largest resort with the most capacity and largest sports facilities.

During the summer of 2006 a management center was launched in Sant Carles de la Ràpita (Delta de l’Ebre) where students could make English camps and also practice water sports such as sailing. As the summer camps in Spain were very successful with the Andorran students, in 2007 the Andorra Camp was organized, a camp that combined adventure activities with learning English. A year later in 2008, another summer camp management center was opened in La Cerdanya, operating until 2017.

In 2010 we created the Spanish Summer brand, a specific product for foreign students who come to learn Spanish during our summer camps and thus share experiences with students who learn English. So far more than 1000 students (Russians, Germans, English, Italians ...) have participated in the summer camps to learn Spanish.

In summer 2015, English Summer S.A. reinvented its summer camps considerably expanding its offer with new themed camps: Tech Camp, Tennis Camp, Sailing Camp, Watersports Camp, BTT Camp, Adventure Camp, Horseriding Camp, Dance Camp and Chef Camp.

Every year we try to improve and renew our facilities in order to offer you the best qualities. In 2017 we completely renovated Vallclara, to turn it into our first versatile summer camp with modular rooms that allow you to go from bunk beds to double beds and be able to offer you Premium family tourism stays. In addition, this same year we began to work with Petit Style and Happy Kids Media, and the first fashion camp for children, Kids Fashion Camp, emerged.

In 2018 we incorporated a new technological system of bracelets with NFC technology that allows us to have better control of student accounts thanks to the application we have created and thus parents can see what their children consume and be informed about everything moment.

2019 was another year of collaborations, together with PortAventura World, we created the first English camp in one of the biggest and best amusement parks in Europe. It was also a year of renovations in our houses. We did the first phase of the renovation of the house in La Capella and we just completely renovated it in 2020.

In 2020 we also renovated the main building of our house in Tamarit. In addition to incorporating new activities and themes in our summer camps, adapting to the current circumstances due to Covid-19.
However, 2020 was a very important year for us as we "celebrated" our 40th anniversary. 40 years of magic, of English, of friendships that last a lifetime, 40 years that it all began and that we continue to enjoy day by day.

The summer of 2021 was one of the most important ones for the children after a complicated school year full of changes due to the confinement. After spending a year in the "new normal", the students needed a well-deserved break and activities that would allow them to enjoy and continue learning in the most special and fun way possible. In 2022 we were able to share the exciting news that the English Summer S.A. group had acquired the Hotel Villa Engracia, located in Poblet, a wonderful natural setting. From the very first moment we committed ourselves to recovering the splendour of Villa Engracia by improving, renovating and preserving the facilities of this 19th century modernist building. With this new project, we offer an even more complete and enriching experience for groups of friends and families who wish to enjoy their holidays in a rural and peaceful setting.

In 2023 we are part of the organising committee of the International Camping Congress (ICC2023), a congress that brought together more than 300 leisure education professionals from 33 different countries. The international event was held for the first time in our country, specifically in the province of Tarragona, and shared the experience of camps around the world, different cultures and new trends.

1980

1987

The Fleix family bought La Capella spa hotel in Poblet and thus expanded their offer to hold summer camps.

1989-1991

As a result of the succes of the summer camps and private lessons, in 1989 the English landuage academy was opened in Tarragona and in 1991 English Summer opened another one in Reus.

1998

Summer camps were still booming, so the Fleix family opened a new centre in 1998, but this time on the coast, a few meters from the beach, the Tamarit camp.

2004

In the summer of 2004 another new residential center was inaugurated, this time in the Prades Mountains. This is the largest resort with the largest sports facilities.

2006

A management center was launched in Sant Carles de la Ràpita where students could do an English camp and also practice water sports

2007

The Andorra Camp is organized, a camp that used to combined adventure activities with learning English.

2008

Another summer camp center was opened in La Cerdanya.

2010

We created the Spanish Summer brand, a specific product for foreign students to come and learn Spanish during our summer camps.

2011

The first Chinese camp in Spain is created, the Chinese Summer Camp.

2013

A new program to learn German in summer and a technology camp are created by LEGO Education at Campus Cerdanya.

2014

A new summer camp is launched, the first thematic camp linking English learning and soccer practice at C.D. FutbolSalou.

2015

English Summer S.A. He re-invented his summer camps with more themed camps: tech camp, tennis camp, sailing camp, watersports camp, BTT camp, adventure camp, horseriding camp, dance camp and chef camp.

2017

We completely reformed our house in Vallclara and Kids Fashion Camp arrives, the first children's fashion camp with Petit Style and Happy Kids Media.

2018

We developed a new system to have greater control of the students through personalizad bracelets with NFC technology.

2019

We carried out the 1st phase of the renovation of the Poblet house and opted for a new camp center: PortAventura World.

2020

We have finished the reforms of Finca La Capella and renovated the main building of Finca Tamarit!

2021

One of the most important summers after a complicated and "new normal" school year. We started our collaboration with Cambridge School.

2022

We acquired the Villa Engracia hotel and apartment complex, located in Poblet, a wonderful natural setting.

2023

We are part of the organising committee of the International Camping Congress (ICC 2023), which will be held for the first time in our country, specifically in the province of Tarragona.
